Cadillacs, caballeros, and some outrageous visitations combine for one spectacular birthday party when TheatreWorks, the nationally acclaimed theater of Silicon Valley, presents the West Coast premiere of the exuberant, rollicking new comedy, SUNSETS AND MARGARITAS, by José Cruz González. (March 10-April 4) Gregorio Serrano has his hands full with his overly assimilated family. So when his father, Calendario crashes his cherished red Cadillac through the wall of his restaurant, it’s pretty clear that it’s time to settle papa into a senior living center. But is it just Papa Calendario, or is Gregorio’s whole family spinning out of control? From his lesbian Republican daughter and her still unnamed infant daughter (Ashleigh, Amber, or Courtney are strong contenders), to his wheel-chair bound, fashion designing, Chicano activist son, to his own erratic visions of the Blessed Virgin and frequent episodes of hyperventilation that make paper bags a must-have accessory, maybe a little bit of “loco” runs in the family. This delightful comic confección has a heart of pure gold. March 10-April, Tuesdays through Sundays – visit www.theatreworks.org.

Photographer Anthony Kurtz is set to exhibit It All Came So Close to Never Happening, a pair of intertwined photographic stories where the outcomes of human uprisings, or the lack thereof, result in a futuristic portrayal of a world gone wrong. Dickerman Prints Gallery will be hosting a public opening reception on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at 3180 17th Street, San Francisco, and the exhibition will be open on weekdays through April 30, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Through romanticized, dark, bold and evocative imagery, Kurtz blurs the line between fiction and reality while drawing on themes of marginalization, conformity, mass-privatization and environmental degradation.

One photographic story, The Human Uprising, follows the mass mobilization of common men becoming modern-day heroes in a struggle of ideals and power. It is a tale of solidarity, resistance, revolution and of a common realization that the future of mankind is at stake.

Concurrently, The World of Tomorrow presents a possible aftermath: a romantic and haunting vision of a post-apocalyptic future seen through the lens of stormy skies, deserted cities and abandoned industry.

Taxi magazine said of Kurtz’s work, “Distinct beauty can be seen in Anthony’s portfolio of wonderful imagery that tugs on the human heart and gnaws on the human conscious, calling for awareness of one’s own existence, thoughts, and surroundings.”

Together, the images presented in It All Came So Close to Never Happening read like cinematic stills or panels from a graphic novel: a hyperrealistic view of the world that contains a sense of mystery, sadness, beauty and romanticism.

To create this alternate reality, Kurtz digitally retouches his original photos by playing with shadow, light and color to form a vibrant mix of documentary and fine art. The resulting images challenge viewers to understand the human condition in modern times and decide if they should be concerned or fascinated by this possible glimpse into our society’s future.

Featuring a broad range of media and concerns, the exhibition highlights the diversity of contemporary practice in the Bay Area and seeks to foster an informal dialogue between artists within institutions of higher learning. The exhibition is co-curated by UC Berkeley M.F.A. students Miguel Arzabe and Bonnie Begusch.

Saving the economy has usually meant harming the Earth. Economic growth spurts past — from the Gold Rush to the Industrial Revolution, from the rise of the automobile and the housing boom — have required heavily consuming environmental resources. But over the past few years economists and environmentalists have begun to explore the possibility of economic growth that preserves or even helps the environment, and the Obama administration is investing billions of dollars to spur green job growth in the energy and automotive industries. As a growth strategy, and a way to tackle some of California’s scariest environment and infrastructure problems, going green makes a lot of sense, and federal stimulus money devoted to particular industries may not be enough. How can California create decades of green growth across its entire economy? Zócalo and the New America Foundation invite leaders in the field and the state to explore how best to green the state workforce, transform industries to grow sustainably, and make our towns and cities more livable.

Steve Westly, How California can Lead the Clean Tech Revolution
Steve Westly is founder and managing partner of The Westly Group. Mr. Westly previously served as the Controller and Chief Fiscal Officer of the state of California, chairing the State Lands Commission and serving on 63 other boards and commissions. During his term, Mr. Westly led an effort to commit more than $1 billion to clean technology investments. Mr. Westly is a former a Senior Vice President at eBay and author of two books on alternative energy and utilities.

Discussion: How Do We Start a Long-Run Green Boom?
California has long led the country on environmental initiatives — the state has pledged to produce a third of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. Today, California has an estimated 159,000 green jobs, and over the last 13 years, green jobs have grown by 36 percent, while Californian jobs in general have grown by 13 percent. But despite these forward-looking trends, how can policymakers ensure that the green boom doesn’t quickly go bust, or that the boom benefits all Californians, not just those who can buy Priuses? Zócalo and the New America Foundation invite thinkers in the field to consider how best to develop the economy and preserve the environment in the long run.

Lisa Margonelli, Can California Green its Worst Problems?
California was once known for its smog. But an aggressive approach to regulation turned us into a leader for the nation, created jobs, and gave us cleaner air. How can California transform today’s vexing challenges — traffic jams, heat waves, even supporting the aging population — into green opportunities? Lisa Margonelli, director of the New America Foundation’s Energy Policy Initiative and author of Oil On the Brain: Petroleum’s Long Strange Trip to Your Tank, explains how the state can green its gremlins.

Discussion to be followed by a hosted wine reception!

The other day I was wandering around some back allies in my town and came across all of these cool poles that had been painted and scraped and repainted over and over again. I thought it gave these grunge textures a very cool feel, almost like an abstract acrylic painting or something. I’ve got all kinds of cool textures coming your way in the next few weeks, so get excited! Enjoy!

ColosseoType.com, An All-HTML5 Endeavor:

The site for the Colosseo poster is my first production-ready website with HTML5 under the hood. I’ve coded sites semantically with HTML5 class names before (see Jon Tan’s article), but this is the first with legitimate HTML5 elements such as

and

in the markup.

IE doesn’t yet recognize HTML5, so I’ve added Remy Sharp’s HTML5 shiv script, which forces IE to acknowledge the new elements.

Granted, the Colosseo site is a one-pager, but hey, it’s a start.

Update: It looks like Firefox 2.x doesn’t play well with HTML5, either. Here’s another article from Remy Sharp on getting Firefox 2 to recognize HTML5. (Thanks to Brian over at Monoscope for pointing this out.)
