Design history is the study of the evolution of a design idea or a concept. The study is important in context with societal or individual perspectives over a period of time with social, political or economical changes. Be it fashion or industrial design, advertisement or packaging, historical study of designs is important to understand the process to implement the changing consumer behavior along with the advancements in technology.

Unlike any other historical study, design history is less academic and more industry-oriented in nature. Design history is more concerned with the study of implication of changing design techniques and knowhow with respect to production and consumption. Study of design history is more inclined towards practice-based realistic models that directly relate to the industry and the consumer.
